Cleanings

A dental cleaning, also known as prophylaxis, is a procedure performed by a dental hygienist or dentist to remove plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth. It is an essential part of maintaining good oral health and preventing dental problems such as cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.

During a dental cleaning, the hygienist or dentist will use special tools to clean the teeth, both above and below the gumline. They may also use a gritty paste and a high-powered electric brush to polish the teeth and remove surface stains.

It is recommended that adults receive a dental cleaning at least twice a year, although some individuals may need more frequent cleanings depending on their oral health needs. Regular dental cleanings, combined with good oral hygiene habits, can help prevent dental problems and keep your smile healthy and bright.

Oral Cancer Screening

An oral cancer screening is a dental examination performed by a dentist or oral surgeon to detect signs of oral cancer or precancerous conditions in the mouth. The goal of an oral cancer screening is to identify any abnormal tissue changes early on, when they are most treatable.

During an oral cancer screening, the dentist or oral surgeon will examine the mouth, throat, and tongue for any unusual changes, such as lumps, bumps, or sores that do not heal. They may also use special tools, such as a light and mirror or a special dye, to help identify any areas of concern.

It is recommended that adults receive an oral cancer screening at least once a year, especially if they have any risk factors.

Gum Disease

Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is a bacterial infection that affects the gums, teeth, and supporting structures of the mouth. It is a common condition that can range from mild gum inflammation (gingivitis) to more severe forms of periodontitis that can cause tooth loss.

Gum disease is caused by bacteria in plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that forms on the teeth and gums. When plaque is not removed through proper oral hygiene, it can harden into tartar (or calculus), which can only be removed through professional cleaning by a dental professional.

The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. It causes inflammation and bleeding of the gums and can be reversed with proper brushing and flossing, along with regular professional cleanings. Gum disease can be diagnosed in-office at Desai Dental. Dr. Desai can put a treatment plan in place to help you manage gum disease.
